More than 100 water professionals spend the week at The Water Campus taking part in North American Deltares Software Days

BATON ROUGE, La. (March 13, 2019) More than 100 government employees, private consultants, and university researchers from the United States and Canada are spending this week learning the ins and outs of computer modeling to address a wealth of questions about water management.

The North American Deltares Software Days held at The Water Campus this week brings together more than 100 professionals interested in becoming more proficient in Delft-FEWS (used for flood forecast, reservoir operations, and coastal data management) and Delft3D (used to investigate how water and sediment flow in coastal and estuary environments).

“I’ve been asked why we’ve brought this training opportunity to Baton Rouge and the answer is it reflects a continually strengthening partnership between The Water Institute of the Gulf and Deltares,” said Edwin Welles, hydrologist and director of Deltares USA. “Plus, this is such a great facility and what better time to be here discussing flood modeling when we can just look out the window and see the Mississippi River at high water.”

The week included three courses on the modeling tools as well as practical help and advice along with a workshop on how to move from models to action as communities strive for resilience in the face of changing environmental conditions.

“The partnership with Deltares on this, and many other projects, reflects the ongoing commitment we have to perform, and facilitate bringing together, the best science has to offer to help communities around the world,” said Justin Ehrenwerth, president and CEO of The Water Institute of the Gulf. “The Water Campus, of which the Institute is a part, continues to grow as a place to gather the best minds in water management with a goal of finding real and practical solutions for communities in need.”
